Degree Credits
A candidate for a bachelor's degree must complete a minimum of 120 credits from the college Liberal Arts and Sciences Distribution Requirements; professional courses; major program of study; or as free elective courses which do not fit into any of the required general distribution areas or are not required to fulfill a particular area. Students must complete these credits with a cumulative GPA of 2.000 or greater.
Please note that Physical Education courses may not be used toward degree credit.
Maximum Course Load in a Single Subject: Without special permission, no student may offer more than 48 credits (or sixteen courses) in a single subject.
Major Requirements
A student must also complete an approved major (ordinarily 30 to 42 credits). A maximum of two courses in the major subject may also be used to satisfy the minimum General Distribution Requirements.

- Completion of a Minor (Optional)
A student may elect to pursue a minor field or certificate option in addition to the major field if a minor program or certificate option is available in the desired subject. However, University College does not require completion of a minor in order for students to earn their degree. General Distribution Requirements
General Distribution Requirements refers to the College (liberal arts and sciences) requirements. These requirements are distributed among the following general areas: English Composition, Humanities, Social Sciences, Math and Natural Sciences, and Cross-Cultural Perspectives. Students are required to complete courses in each of these areas in order to be eligible for a degree.
- English (6 credits)
Students are required to complete English Writing 101 and one of English Writing 102, 201, 301, 303, 315, & 342. Unless exempt, students should complete these courses in their first two terms at University College.
- Humanities (minimum of 9 credits)
Students are required to complete three term courses totaling nine credits in Africana studies (pre-approved courses only), art (except studio art), art history, Asian studies (pre-approved courses only), classics, Jewish studies, Latin American studies, music (except applied and performance music), classics, English (except film and writing courses, including 01:350:100, 101, 201, 301, 302, and 303), foreign languages and literature, linguistics, Medieval studies, Middle Eastern studies (pre-approved courses only), comparative literature, Puerto Rican and Hispanic Caribbean studies (pre-approved courses only), history, philosophy, Slavic and Eastern European studies, theater arts, or religion, with a maximum of two courses in any one field. - Social Sciences (minimum of 9 credits)
Students are required to complete three term courses totaling nine credits in Africana studies (pre-approved courses only), American studies, Asian studies (pre-approved courses only), anthropology (pre-approved courses only), cognitive science, economics, geography (pre-approved courses only), labor studies, Middle Eastern studies (pre-approved courses only), political science, psychology, Puerto Rican and Hispanic Caribbean studies (pre-approved courses only), women's studies (pre-approved courses only), or sociology, with a maximum of two courses in any one field. - Mathematics and Natural Sciences (minimum of 9 credits)
Students are required to complete three term courses totaling nine credits in science, with at least 3 credits in areas other than mathematics, computer science, and statistics and no more than two courses in any one field. Please see the distribution requirements guide for more details.
- Cross-Cultural Perspectives (minimum of 3 credits)
Students are required to complete one course in a field that provides a perspective on other cultures. This course must be approved by University College - New Brunswick as a cross-cultural perspectives course. For a list of approved courses, please click here.

Proficiency Requirements
- Math Proficiency Requirement
Students who have not completed three years of college preparatory mathematics (through intermediate algebra) in secondary school or comparable courses at the college level must complete one of the following options:
- (a) Math 025-026 - Elementary & Intermediate Algebra
- (b) Math 027 - Elements of Algebra
These courses do not carry degree credit.
Some students may opt to "Test Out" of this proficiency. This is accomplished when a student takes the Math Placement test offered by the department and scores high enough to enter Pre-calculus.
- Foreign Language Proficiency Requirement
Students who have not satisfactorily completed two years of a foreign language in secondary school or one year of a language at the college level, are required to complete a year of a foreign language at University College. Credit for this course is applied to the humanities requirement.
Students who attended a high school equivalent in a foreign country may submit a copy of their foreign credentials to satisfy the foreign language requirement. Please note that the foreign language must appear on the transcript as a subject area.
(i.e.: A transcript from India must show Hindi as an area of instruction in order for the requirement to be satisfied.)
Some students, having knowledge of a foreign language and lacking the adequate school records, may opt to "Test Out" of this proficiency by successfully completing exit examinations in the foreign language. For details on foreign language proficiency testing, please contact the respective language department directly. Please be advised that exit examinations are offered at the department's discretion and are non-credit bearing.
Generally, the proficiency requirements must be satisfied during the first full academic year at University College - New Brunswick.
Residency Requirements
- Students transferring from outside schools, including Rutgers Camden and Newark.
The residency requirement refers to a minimum number of credits that need to be completed as a matriculated student at University College in order to graduate.
No matter how many courses are completed elsewhere, students must earn a minimum of 30 credits as a matriculated student in University College, New Brunswick. In addition, at least 12 credits of the 30 (or more, if so specified by the major department) must be completed in the major at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. Overall, 120 degree credits are required. This figure includes your proficiency requirements, 33-36 credits of general distribution requirements, your major and any free electives required to bring your total up 120. Also, 30 of the last 42 credits must be completed at the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers University as a regularly enrolled University College degree candidate.
- Students transferring from other Rutgers New Brunswick Colleges.
The residency requirement refers to a minimum number of credits that need to be completed as a matriculated student at University College in order to graduate.
No matter how many courses are completed elsewhere, students must earn a minimum of 30 credits as a matriculated student in University College, New Brunswick. However, students transferring from other Rutgers New Brunswick Colleges may request that courses completed while enrolled as a matriculated student at these units be used to satisfy a portion of the University College residency requirement.
In addition, at least 12 credits of the 30 (or more, if so specified by the major department) must be completed in the major at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. Overall, 120 degree credits are required. This figure includes your proficiency requirements, 33-36 credits of general distribution requirements, your major and any free electives required to bring your total up 120. Also, 30 of the last 42 credits must be completed at the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers University as a regularly enrolled University College degree candidate.
