Restrictions

  • A maximum of two courses in the major subject may be used to satisfy the minimum general distribution requirement.  Additional courses required by the major but not in the major subject (e.g., mathematics for a computer science major) may be used to satisfy the minimum general distribution requirements if appropriate.
  • For those subjects that can be used to satisfy more than one of the three main distribution areas (2, 3 &4), such as African Studies, Anthropology, Geography, Puerto Rican & Hispanic Caribbean Studies, etc., a maximum of two courses only can be applied toward areas 2, 3 & 4.  Thus if Geography 101 and 102 (which are physical geography courses and listed in this brochure under Math & Natural Sciences) are taken to satisfy area 4, another course  in geography (listed herein under the Social Sciences and considered a cultural geography course) cannot be used to satisfy area 3.   One geography course under your Math & Natural Science area and another under your Social Science area would be acceptable.
  • Courses with the following subject indices do not satisfy areas 1-5 of the general distribution requirements at University College.  However, these may be used to satisfy Free Electives: 012, 203, 206, 300 (except course 306), 377, 571, 660, 690, 691, 701, 832, 910, 965 (except courses 211, 212, 311, 312), 966, 975.
  • Also, courses offered at School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (School 11), except Animal Science 142 & 275, Biochemistry 115, Entomology 202, Environmental Sciences 375, Food Science 400, Marine Science 200, Meteorology 201, 202 and Plant Science 170; the College of Engineering (School 14); the College of Pharmacy (School 30); the School of Business (School 33); and the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy (School 10) cannot be used in the general distribution requirements.

Other Requirements

  • No physical education activity course can be used to satisfy degree requirements.
  • No more than 48 credits or 16 term courses in a single subject may be applied toward the minimum 120 credits required for graduation.
