School of Arts & Sciences Class of 2013
Understanding your academic options and making some good decisions about your courses are keys to making a strong transition to college! This page is designed to take you through the Academic Planning and Course Request process for the Fall 2009 semester. Please plan to spend time reading and thinking about your academic interests and options to fully prepare to become a Rutgers student.
1. Please carefully read the Academic Planning & Advising Information Booklet.
This booklet has been designed to give you a good overview of the philosophy of a liberal arts education, the School of Arts and Sciences curriculum requirements, and an understanding of what a first term schedule looks like.
You can also watch a video, an Introduction to the Liberal Arts Curriculum, which will give you an overview of this booklet.
For course descriptions, please see the online catalog.
2. Explore your special Learning Communities options: http://rulc.rutgers.edu
We are excited about our many Learning Community and Academic Enhancements, including faculty-taught Byrne Family First-Year Seminars, peer-taught First Year Interest Groups (FIGs), Discovery Houses, and the Douglass Residential College; take time to review those many opportunities on the web.
3. Once you have read through both the Academic Planning and Learning Communities Booklets, please print and review the Course Request Form.
The Course Request Form includes all the courses that our departments have identified as appropriate for new students. You will use this form to choose courses (and alternates) for your first semester in college (You will be scheduling for the spring semester in November).
You can watch a video, Completing the Course Request Form, which will give you instructions.
As you sit down to review the Course Request Form, plan to contact a first year advisor either by emailing questions to frosh@sas.rutgers.edu or by calling Academic Services at 732-445-0163. If you call between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., please identify yourself as a new first year student and explain that you are filling out the Course Request Form and have questions for a first year advisor.
Once you have completed and signed the Course Request Form, please mail all of the pages together to the following address:
