Students admitted to SAS on a non-matriculating or “visiting” basis may take up to 30 credits of coursework, and are not actively working towards completion of an undergraduate degree from SAS. Students attending Rutgers on a non-matriculating basis usually belong to one of the following groups:
Visiting
Students are matriculating at another institution. They have had to take a semester or two away from that institution but intend to return for completion of the degree. Students may be full- or part-time. No transfer evaluation is done except as needed for registration into upper level courses requiring a pre-requisite.
Post-baccalaureate
Students are taking courses to earn the credentials necessary for a graduate or professional program.
Second Major
Students have already received an undergraduate degree at Rutgers. In most cases, they had significant coursework towards a second major, and need only a few courses to complete it. Certification of completion of the additional major is noted on the transcript. Please note, however, that a second bachelor’s degree is not conferred.
High School
Students may occasionally take a course at the recommendation of a faculty member.
When may I register?
Non-matriculated students may register on a space-available for fall classes starting on August 1st, and for spring courses beginning on December 1st.
How will my grade point average be calculated?
In all cases, coursework is “E-Prefixed”. The credits do not accumulate, nor is a grade point average calculated. Taking post-bac courses on a non-matriculated basis cannot be used as a mechanism for improving your undergraduate grade point average.
If I have been dismissed from another unit of Rutgers, or from another college, may I take courses on a non-matriculating basis?
No. Non-matriculating students must meet the same eligibility requirements for admission as matriculating students. You may, however, take courses during our Summer or Winter Sessions.
