Academic Progress Review

Academic Standing Progress Review occurs every semester and seeks to ensure that students are making consistent and realistic progress towards graduation standards.

Academic Progress review addresses immediate concerns by assessing recent academic performance as a function of term grade point averages. Although a single weak grade point average may not be significant, unchecked consistent deficiencies can result in irreparable cumulative GPAs.  It’s incumbent upon the institution to include proactive, preventative measures to intervene prior to severe academic distress.

Academic Warning and Probation

Based upon the most recent term grade point average.

Academic Warning
  • Semester grade-point average lower than 2.00 after a previous semester(s) of good standing (2.00 or higher).
  • Restrictions:
    • Course and credit limit not to exceed 5 courses & 16 credits.
    • Non-traditional students not to exceed 4 courses & 13 credits.
    • (ONLY graduating seniors and students with extenuating circumstances may petition for exemption.)
  • Conditions:
    • Must earn a 2.0 term average or higher to be removed from probation.
    • May be subject to mandatory advising requirements.

Academic Probation
  • Two consecutive semester grade-point averages lower than 2.00
  • Restrictions:
    • Course and credit limit not to exceed 4 courses and 13 credits.
  • Conditions:
    • Must earn a 2.0 or higher term average to be removed from probation.
    • May be subject to mandatory advising requirements.

Continued Probation
  • Three or more consecutive semester grade-point averages lower than 2.0. However, at the end of the spring term a student will be placed on continued probation provided that she/he retains a cumulative GPA above the designated dismissal standards outlined under Academic Dismissal.
  • Restrictions:
    • Course and credit limit not to exceed 4 courses and 13 credits.
  • Conditions:
    • Must earn a 2.0 or higher term average to be removed from probation.
    • Are subject to mandatory advising requirements.

Academic Dismissal

Academic Dismissal is based on the cumulative grade point average measured against a graduated standard of increasing expectations in accordance with the number of terms of enrollment and designated class year.

  • Student’s cumulative average will be reviewed each year at the end of the spring term to ensure that all students are making consistent and realistic progress towards graduation standards.
  • A student will be subject to Academic Dismissal from the SAS when the cumulative grade point average is less than the figure below:
Semester Class Year Cumulative GPA
2nd 2012 1.5
4th 2011 1.7
6th 2010 1.9
8th or higher 2009 2.0
  • Academic Dismissal does not necessitate a prior term of Academic Warning.
  • First years and transfer students enrolled in their first semester at Rutgers during a Spring term ARE NOT subject to dismissal, even when the cumulative GPA is below the specified standard for their class year.

What Can You Do if You Earn a Dismissal Average?

  • Be Patient!  Your record will be reviewed and you will be notified in writing via email and standard mail.  We know that this is a difficult time but each student inquiry prior to the completion of the Academic Review slows the speed with which we are able to notify you of your accurate status.
  • Read Carefully & Follow Instructions!  Your letter will explain all of your options for continuing your studies, availability of staff advising to ensure you select the best option for you, and time lines by which you will need to make a decision about how you wish to proceed.
  • Speak With An Adviser In Person!  This is the best way to ensure that you select the option that will be best for your situation and potential graduation from SAS.
  • Register for Summer As Early as Possible!  While we prefer that you be able to enjoy your summer break, the sooner you are able to enroll in course work that will help to improve your performance the more quickly you will be able to prepare for the following term effectively.

Specific Options for Continuation of Study if You Qualify for Academic Dismissal:

Grace Period Remediation

Your dismissal may be reversed if you raise your GPA to the standard required for your terms of enrollment and class year by completing course work during the Rutgers summer session, no later than approximately August 8th.

  • If you are able to sufficiently raise your cumulative average you will be taken off of the dismissal list but may be placed on warning, probation or continued probation as determined by your term gpa.
  • In some cases, when the cumulative average is such that the grace period is not sufficient to raise the GPA to the required standard, it may be more beneficial to waive the grace period in favor of the appropriate option for readmission.  (See readmission below.)
  • Students dismissed for a First or Second time may utilize this option.

Written Appeal

If there are extenuating circumstances that account for your poor academic performance you may appeal the committee’s decision by submitting a letter to the Faculty Committee for Academic Standing no later the end of the first week of June.  (See information regarding appeals below.)

  • If you believe you have an appealable circumstance, it is important that you come in person to speak with an Adviser.
  • While the acceptance of an appeal is not guaranteed, if your appeal is accepted, you will be readmitted and placed on continued probation for the following term of enrollment and a note of academic dismissal will remain in your academic file.
  • Students dismissed for a First or Second time may utilize this option.

Readmission

For students dismissed for a first time AND unable to raise their cumulative gpa during the Grace Period OR by choice waived the grace period in favor of readmission, they may accept their dismissal and earn readmission by the following:  You must complete six credits (2 courses) of course work for which you have not yet earned credit (no courses in which you previously earned a D or higher and no E-credit courses), during the Rutgers summer session, and obtain a summer session GPA of 2.75 or higher by the end of the third summer term.  Courses taken during the grace period may count toward readmission.  If however you enroll in more than 6 credits of summer course work, your average for ALL summer course work must be at least 2.75.

  • If you are successfully able to earn readmission you will be placed on Continued Probation with mandatory conditions and restrictions for the following term of enrollment and a note of academic dismissal will remain in your academic file.
  • ONLY students dismissed for a FIRST time may utilize this option for continued study.
  • Students academically dismissed for a second time are ineligible for readmission except by written appeal to the Committee on Academic Standing.
