Congratulations Livingston College Seniors!

The Commencement Convocation will be held on Thursday May 22, 2008, at 1:30 PM at the Louis Brown Athletic Center (RAC) on the Livingston Campus of Rutgers University.

Student will line up at 12:45.  You will need to pick up a name call card at the end of the rear corridor on the left side of the RAC before proceeding to the line up area on the arena floor.

Keynote Speaker

Liza Kirschenbaum, Esq., Livingston College ’87, summa cum laud, earned her JD from New York University and then practiced law in the Morristown office of Riker, Danzig, Scherer, Hyland & Perretti, LLP until she left to become the founding State Director of Court Appointed Special Advicates (CASA), an agency that advocates for abused and neglected children .  She serves on the Foster and Adoptive Family Services of New Jersey, the New Jersey Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect and the Task Force Protection Sub-Committee.  Ms. Kirschenbaum was named a Distinguished Livingston Alumni in 2006.

Who can participate in the Commencement Convocation?

If you were on track to graduate this Spring, expecting to have your Core  Requirements met and your  major completed and 120 credits,  and applied for your diploma, your name will be listed in the program and you will be eligible to participate, even if you end up failing one of the courses you need to graduate.

If you fall six credits or fewer short and plan to complete those credits during the coming Summer Session, contact Dean Tim Grimm at tgrimm@echo.rutgers.edu to ask for permission to participate.

When?

Regalia will be available to purchase in-store around April 7. Everything will be available to take home the same day. Pre-ordering is not needed.

Where?

The Livingston Bookstore will be selling regalia for the following graduates: Livingston College, MBA (New Brunswick and Newark), and Rutgers Business School (New Brunswick and Newark). The Rutgers Bookstore (in Ferren Mall) will be selling regalia for all other graduates, including the Business School and MBA.

How Much?

Livingston College Bachelor – all Livingston students, including those completing the Rutgers Business School, must purchase this regalia:

Complete set (cap, gown, hood, tassel) $59
Hood only $21
Gown only $37

How do I know my size?

The gowns are available in 11 different sizes, based on height and weight. We will have samples in the store to try on.

What color hood do I wear?

You must know whether your major is a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. BA wear white hoods, BS wear gold hoods.

What about other graduation/alumni stuff?

We sell various graduation and alumni merchandise in the store, including diploma frames, auto accessories, key-chains, desk accessories, and clothing. The diploma frames we carry say “Rutgers The State University of New Jersey”, but students can special order custom mats with a specific school name. And we also have literature on ordering class rings and custom announcements.

Graduation Announcements

When you purchase a cap and gown, you will receive three announcements.

What kind of graduation honors will be awarded?

All graduating seniors who complete their academic career with a cumulative GPA of 3.500 or above at the end of the Spring 2008 semester are awarded graduation honors and are eligible to wear the gold honors cord.

Beginning this year the Latin form of honors will be bestowed: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude.  GPA requirements for distinctions:

  • 3.500 - 3.699 Cum Laude (Honors)
  • 3.700 - 3.849 Magna Cum Laude (High Honors)
  • 3.850 - 4.000 Summa Cum Laude (Highest Honors)

All students who are eligible to receive graduation honors will be informed by email on either the evening of Sunday, May 18 or the morning of Monday, May 19.

Gold Honors Cords will be distributed at the offices of the Honors Dean on each campus beginning on Monday, May 19.

Information for Guests

Directions to the Louis Brown Athletic Center (RAC) can be found at: http://maps.rutgers.edu/directions.aspx?id=261

Parking is available at the Athletic Center. The School of Engineering holds its ceremonies in the morning and their ceremony will let out as you arrive for the Livingston Ceremony. Following the Engineering ceremony, the building will be closed until Noon.

Tickets are not required to attend the ceremony. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. 
There is a designated area for guests with disabilities in the RAC. Because seating in this area is limited, guests with disabilities will only be able to have one additional person sit with them. This guideline will be strictly enforced. 

Balloons and air horns are not permitted in the Athletic Center.  Please do not bring them with you.

Rutgers security will screen RAC entrants.
