The following provides 2008 Rutgers College Commencement ceremony information. Please visit this site for up-to-date details prior to commencement.

Commencement will be taking place today, Thursday, May 22. The ceremony is at an outdoor venue - please dress accordingly.

How long is the Rutgers College Commencement ceremony?

Typically, graduation lasts approximately three and a half hours.

Who can participate in the Rutgers College Commencement?

You may participate in the RC 2008 commencement if you completed all degree requirements and graduated in October 2007, January 2008, or are enrolled in classes in spring 2008 sufficient to complete all degree requirements in May 2008.

Commencement Procession Line

Degree candidates are asked to please report to the lawn behind Old Queens by 12:00 pm in order to make certain all candidates will be lined up alphabetically.

All candidates are required to have a marshalling card for photography purposes and to be read by the announcer. When you arrive behind Old Queens, commencement staff will be present to help you find the correct group and to put you into the correct order. Late arrivals will be accommodated as best as possible.

Commencement Speaker: Rey Ramsey, RC '82

Rey Ramsey (RC '82) is Chief Executive Officer of One Economy Corporation. Under his leadership, One Economy, which he co-founded in 2000, has emerged as the nation’s leading nonprofit organization in the field of technology. He has led the organization’s growth from four employees working in basement to a global organization that has taken root on four continents. Rey Ramsey

Mr. Ramsey is an internationally respected social entrepreneur who has spent years creating innovative partnerships between nonprofits, government and the private sector. He has been featured in numerous publications and was named among “50 Great Leaders” by Oregon Business magazine.

Mr. Ramsey is the author, with Ben Hecht, of ManagingNonprofits.org: Dynamic Management for the Digital Age (John Wiley & Sons).

Prior to the founding of One Economy, Mr. Ramsey served as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Enterprise Foundation. Before joining Enterprise, Mr. Ramsey served in the cabinets of two governors of Oregon as the state’s Director of Housing and Community Services and practiced law. He has also previously served as the chairman of Habitat for Humanity International.

Mr. Ramsey serves on many boards, including the Schnitzer Investment Corporation, Washington Jesuit Academy and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). He is the immediate past chairman of Habitat for Humanity International. He holds a B.A. in political science from Rutgers University and is a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School.

When will I receive my degree/diploma?

Actual conferred diplomas will be mailed after commencement to your address. Students are asked to be certain that their address on record is accurate. Changes can be made at the Registrar's Office. October 2007 and January 2008 graduates may complete the Diploma Mailing Request Form for early delivery of diploma via the U.S. Postal Service.

Note: Diplomas dated with a May 2008 conferral will be delivered throughout the summer. Diplomas and Official Transcripts will be withheld from all students whose financial accounts and debts (including tuition, housing, parking, and library) are not cleared.

What kind of graduation honors will be awarded?

All graduating seniors who complete their academic career with a cumulative GPA of 3.500 or above at the end of the Spring 2008 semester are awarded graduation honors and are eligible to wear the gold honors cord.

Beginning this year the Latin form of honors will be bestowed: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude.  GPA requirements for distinctions:

  • 3.500 - 3.699 Cum Laude (Honors)
  • 3.700 - 3.849 Magna Cum Laude (High Honors)
  • 3.850 - 4.000 Summa Cum Laude (Highest Honors)

All students who are eligible to receive graduation honors will be informed by email on either the evening of Sunday, May 18 or the morning of Monday, May 19.

Gold Honors Cords will be distributed at the offices of the Honors Dean on each campus beginning on Monday, May 19.

Where do I get my graduation invitations for guests?

When you purchase your cap and gown, you will also be given three graduation invitations. Please note that these invitations are “keepsakes” for you and your family. There is not a limit on the number of guests who may attend.

How do I keep track of graduation information?

It is your responsibility to be kept informed. Please visit the RU Graduating page often for updates.

Where can I Park?

All lots except 1, 9, and 16 on the College Avenue Campus will be available to graduates and their guests. Parking attendants will be stationed around campus assisting drivers to find parking spots.

Please plan to arrive early as lots will fill up.

Where do I purchase my cap and gown?

You can purchase your cap and gown and tassel at the Rutgers University Book Store, Ferren Mall, New Brunswick in April. No pre-ordering is necessary.(732) 246-8448 or (800)240-6240.

Where and when can I get my senior portrait taken?

Portrait Sitting: The Senior Class Council has provided portrait sitting for seniors at no charge, beginning March 2008. Chappell Graduation Images will take Cap & Gown portraits at the five Rutgers University Campus Centers. You will receive a passport-sized color proof in the mail a week after you’ve had your photograph taken and two to three days after the sitting, you will be provided with a link to your digital proofs.

Commencement Senior Photographs

During the Commencement Ceremony, Chappell Graduation Images will take three pictures of each student: receiving their diplomas, a close-up photo, and a commencement portrait. You will receive by mail passport-sized photo proofs within five days of commencement. Please note that there is no obligation on your part to purchase the photographs.
