 Restrictions

The major and the minor may not be selected from the same academic program. In general there are no SAS restrictions on selection of available majors and minors; however, some combinations are prohibited:

  • African, Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Literatures (AMESALL) 013 majors and minors may not minor in Arabic 074, Hindi 505, or Swahili 956.
  • Anthropology 070 may not be combined with Cultural Anthropology 070C or Evolutionary Anthropology 071 as a double major, double minor, or major/minor combination. Cultural Anthropology 070C and Evolutionary Anthropology 071 may not be combined as a double major or double minor, but may be combined as a major/minor combination.
  • Asian Studies 098 minors cannot major or double minor in the language of their area or concentration. For example, a student doing a Japanese concentration in Asian Studies cannot double minor in Japanese, but could double minor in Chinese or Korean, or could major in Chinese.
  • Astrophysics 105 majors may not minor in Physics 750 or Astronomy 100.
  • Biological Sciences 119, Biomathematics 122, Cell Biology and Neuroscience 146, Genetics 447, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry 694, Biochemistry 115, and/or Microbiology 680 cannot be combined as double majors or as major/minor combinations.
  • Business Administration minors cannot pursue a double minor combination with Entrepreneurship.
  • Communication 192, Information Technology and Informatics 547, and/or Journalism and Media Studies 567 cannot be combined as double majors.
  • Creative Writing 351 minors who are double minoring in English 350 cannot use Creative Writing courses to meet the English minor requirements.
  • Criminal Justice 202 majors may not minor in Criminology 204 (beginning Spring 2014).
  • East Asian Languages and Area Studies 214 majors cannot do a minor or double major in the language of their area of concentration.  For example, a student doing a Chinese concentration in East Asian Languages and Area Studies cannot minor or double major in Chinese, but the student could minor in Japanese or Korean.
  • East Asian Languages and Area Studies 214 majors may not minor in Asian Studies 098.
  • Economics 220 majors may not minor in Environmental and Business Economics 373.
  • English 350 minors who are double minoring in Creative Writing cannot use Creative Writing classes to meet the English minor requirements
  • Entrepreneurship minors cannot pursue a double minor combination with Business Administration.
  • Kinesiology and Health 377 majors may not minor in Biological Sciences 119.
  • History/French 513 majors may not minor in History 510 or French 420.
  • History/Political Science 514 majors may not also major or minor in History 510 or Political Science 790.
  • Jewish Studies 563 majors may not minor in Language and Culture of Ancient Israel 583 or Modern Hebrew Language 503.
  • Physics 750 majors may minor in Astronomy 100, but may not count 01:750:341, 342, 343, or 344 toward physics major requirements.
  • Planning and Public Policy 762, Public Health 832, Public Policy 833, Health Administration 501, and Urban Planning and Design 971 cannot be combined as double majors or as major/minor combinations.
  • Sociology 920 majors may not minor in Health and Society 502.
