Nonmatriculating Students

Welcome to SAS!

Nonmatriculated (non-degree-seeking) status in the New Brunswick School of Arts and Sciences is available to students who hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and wish to enroll in undergraduate courses without completing a second bachelor’s degree.

Nonmatriculated enrollment lets you. . .

  • Complete courses for admission to graduate or professional programs
  • Take classes for career advancement or personal enrichment
  • Finish a major or minor begun in the first degree -- A second bachelor’s degree is not conferred. Instead, a narrative comment will be added to the transcript stating that the major or minor was completed after the initial bachelor’s degree was conferred.

Nonmatriculated enrollment has restrictions

Nonmatriculating students are not eligible to . . .

  • Complete or receive a degree.
  • Enroll in more than 30 credits.
  • Earn degree credits or a grade-point average -- Grades earned will appear on the transcript but are E-prefixed to prevent any calculations of GPA or degree credits
  • Improve a Rutgers GPA.
  • Enroll in graduate-level courses -- Apply to Rutgers Graduate Admissions.
  • Receive financial aid.
  • Receive a transcript evaluation of course work completed elsewhere -- except to verify prerequisites for upper level courses, if needed.

Current Rutgers students may not enroll on a nonmatriculated basis

  • Matriculating students at Rutgers may not "step out" of a degree program in progress to take courses on a nonmatriculating basis.
  • Students academically suspended or dismissed may not return to Rutgers on a nonmatriculating basis.  Contact a dean in your school for information about readmission requirements.
