Why Your Role Is So Important
There is a vast of amount of research that strongly suggests that the level and quality of the interactions that a college student has with other students, faculty, and staff greatly affects retention. Research also indicates that the success in the transition from high school to college is critically influenced by initial and continuing orientation and advisement programs, which also allow for positive connections with college staff and faculty during the first year at the institution. Noel (1985) stated:
It is the people who come face-to-face with students on a regular basis who provide the positive growth experiences for students that enable them to identify their goals and talents and learn how to put them to use. The caring attitude of college personnel is viewed as the most potent retention force on a campus (p. 17).
Please be aware that regardless of prior participation or your professional charge as a Rutgers staff member, all participating advisors are required to complete an annual training session.
