Frequently Asked Questions

How will I know which of my credits transfer?

Students transferring from a NJ Community College can use NJ Transfer to assess course transferability. We generally require a grade of "C" or better for a course to transfer.

Students transferring from a four year college or university can make the general assumption that classes completed with a grade of "C" or better in an academic department offered at Rutgers University will be accepted for transfer credit. These courses may or may not be utilized to fulfill major requirements, but will generally receive a minimum of elective academic credit. Please note that this is a general guideline only and should not be considered a guarantee of any sort.

Do I need to take Placement Tests at Rutgers?

That depends! If you have taken a college level writing or math class, you probably do not need a placement test. If not, you may be required to take one or both of our tests.

To see your specific placement requirement, refer to the bottom left-hand corner of your personalized transfer evaluation when you receive it via email. Do not take placement tests prior to receiving your personalized evaluation via email.

When can I meet with an advisor and register for Fall/Spring classes?

We know you’re anxious to get started with your Rutgers University career! We need some time to properly evaluate your transcripts and to prepare for your arrival. We will be holding STAR Days prior to the start of the semester and will be in touch with you.

I can’t wait until the Summer. Can you please meet with me sooner?

We are sorry, but due to the heavy volume of students we cannot meet individually with you. We will be glad to answer all your questions and get you started on the path to success when you attend a STAR Day. Please be patient!

Is there anything I can do now?

YES! You can open a Rutgers University NetID and email account by visiting the following site: All Rutgers students need both a NetID.

You can also ensure that your immunizations are up to date. This website will give you all the information you need.

Note that you may not move into our residence halls if you have not submitted proof of meningococcal vaccination
