Nonmatriculating Students (New Brunswick - SAS)

Students admitted to Rutgers-New Brunswick School of Arts & Science (SAS) on a nonmatriculating or "visiting" basis are not actively working towards completion of an undergraduate degree. These students are limited to 30 credits of coursework as nonmatriculating students at the School of Arts & Sciences.

Students attending Rutgers-New Brunswick on a nonmatriculating basis usually belong to one of the following groups: visiting, returning SAS alumni, post-baccalaureate, or high-school students.

Students matriculating at another institution are considered "visiting." They have had to take a semester or two away from that institution but intend to return for completion of their degree. Visiting students may be full- or part-time. No transfer evaluation is completed except for what may be necessary to register for upper level courses requiring a prerequisite.

Returning SAS Alumni

Students who have already received an undergraduate degree at Rutgers fall under this category. The credits do not accumulate, nor is a grade point average calculated, and all coursework will be "E-Prefixed." Certification of completion of the additional major is noted on the transcript; however, a second bachelor’s degree is not conferred.

Post-Baccalaureate Students in General

Students are taking courses to earn the preparation necessary for a graduate or professional program.

High School Students

Students who occasionally take a course at the recommendation of their high school faculty advisors will fall under this category.

Grade Point Average and Credits
For nonmatriculating students, credits do not accumulate and a grade point average is not calculated. In all cases, coursework is “E” prefixed and does not affect students’ GPA or increase the total number of credits.

Suspended or Dismissed Students
Suspended or Dismissed students may not attend Rutgers as nonmatriculated since they must meet the same eligibility requirements for admission as matriculated students.

Notice: If you previously attended Rutgers Newark or Camden as a nonmatriculated student and wish to reenroll in either one of those two campuses, apply using the University Undergraduate Application through Admissions.

For those wishing to attend Rutgers New Brunswick:

  • If your first bachelor’s degree is from Rutgers: Apply using the New Brunswick SAS Reenrollment Application. You will receive a letter of acceptance from one of our SAS deans.
  • If you have NEVER attended Rutgers: Apply using the University Undergraduate Application through Admissions.
  • If you are a visiting undergraduate or high school student applying for nonmatriculating status in the Summer or Winter terms (only): Apply through Summer Session. (Visiting students wishing to attend Fall or Spring should apply through Undergraduate Admissions. See above.)

Continuing nonmatriculated students may register on "All Student Registration Day". See the registration calendar for more information.
Newly admitted nonmatriculated students may register in late August for the fall semester and in mid-January for the spring semester.
