Independent Study & Research

Registration for an independent study is limited to Juniors and Seniors who have taken introductory courses in the subject in question, have identified a faculty mentor who will oversee the project, and have obtained faculty approval. Such a project is most often done in the major (most departments have 300 or 400- level independent study/research courses in place), but could be completed through the SAS Independent Study and Research course 01:090:393, 394 (for Juniors) or 01:090:493, 494 (for Seniors)

Doing an independent study/research project gives a student an opportunity for academic inquiry not available through regular coursework.SAS students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.000. Approval of the project is at the discretion of the Dean, who reviews the proposal and the applicant’s overall academic record.

SAS Independent Study and Research Proposal Deadlines:

  • The deadline for submission of a proposal for a Fall project is May 1.
  • The deadline for submission of a proposal for a Spring project is December 1.

Students interested in pursuing an independent study are first encouraged to visit their Major Department.
