To compute the grade point average for a given term, multiply the grade received in each course taken by the number of credits the course is worth. Add the grade points together and divide the sum by the total credits of the courses.
Value of Grades
Grade | Value |
A | 4 |
B+ | 3.5 |
B | 3 |
C+ | 2.5 |
C | 2 |
D | 1 |
F | 0 |
Numerical value of grade x Credits = Grade points
Total grade points ÷ Total credits = Cumulative grade-point average
Example of Grade-Point Average
Student: Henry Rutgers, Fall 2020 Semester, School of Arts and Sciences, Rutgers University
Courses Taken | Credits | Grade | Points | Grade Pts. |
Biology II | 4 | A | 4 | 16 |
Biology Lab | 2 | B | 3 | 6 |
Chem 161 | 4 | D | 1 | 4 |
Psych 101 | 3 | C | 2 | 6 |
Calculus I | 4 | A | 4 | 16 |
Total Credits: | 17 | Total Points: | 48 |
Total grade points ÷ Total credits = Cumulative grade-point average
48 ÷ 17 = 2.82 G.P.A.
