German Studies examines the language, history, literature, philosophy, film, art, religion, music, political science, and other dimensions, of the German-speaking world. We provide courses taught by award-winning professors, generous scholarships for study abroad, and extra-curricular activities on-campus and off.

Russian

Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Akhmatova. Read these classics in English, then learn Russian to read the original. Study Russian culture in its historical, social & global contexts in courses like “Russia Between Empire & Nation,” “Russia’s Wars,” “Serial Storytelling.” Enter into dialogue with Russia, past & present!

Incoming first-year students will take approximately 15 credits in their first semester. Advisors will register you for your required English course and the appropriate course(s) to explore this major. You'll provide us with information about other courses you may want to take, or other interests you'd like to include in your first semester registration.

Students in the School of Arts and Sciences pursue a major as their primary area of interest, but an arts and sciences education also includes coursework well beyond major requirements. The SAS Core curriculum, a minor specialization, and general elective courses are all part of the 120 degree credits every student will need to graduate from Rutgers University.

Through these degree components, students will curate their own unique educational experience, but we understand that this level of flexibility and freedom can feel overwhelming for new students. Additional Information Beyond the Classroom

Is there a departmental Honors track or program?

To qualify for departmental honors, a student must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better and an average of 3.4 or better in the major at the end of the junior year. At that time, the student should make a formal application. During their senior year, in addition to fulfilling major course requirements, candidates who are accepted by the discipline honors committee take 01:860:496-497, in which they complete a major research paper under the direction of an adviser.
