What should I do if I want to take a break from the semester?

Information

If you find yourself in difficulty – personal, financial, medical, or emotional – and need to take a break you may consider a Leave of Absence. You can request this by completing a Leave of Absence form https://scarlethub.rutgers.edu/registrar/registration/withdrawal-from-all-courses/. Advisors can talk with you about this option. Failure to attend class is not equivalent to a Leave of Absence, and students will not receive an adjustment of charges or grades (see studentabc.rutgers.edu/withdrawals). Students whose cumulative GPA is below a 2.00 may be required to attend Rutgers Summer Session prior to returning for a Fall or Spring semester.

When you are ready to return after an interruption in enrollment, review the SAS Reenrollment page and submit the applicable reenrollment application. If you were academically suspended or dismissed from SAS, follow the reinstatement requirements; reenrollment applications in this situation are limited to the Summer term.

What if I am dismissed from my previous school or have taken time off?

Information

Students dismissed from their previous school will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis but will still need to meet all respective academic criteria listed above.

If you have taken time off from another school at Rutgers, you may apply to the School of Arts and Science via the reenrollment process. However, if you do not meet admission criteria at the end of a Spring or Fall term, you may not use Summer/Winter courses to meet our admission requirements for reenrollment. The only way to improve your record in this case is to return to your previous school, if that school will allow it.

What is reenrollment, and who should submit an SAS Reenrollment Application?

Information

Reenrollment is the process for returning to Rutgers after an interruption in enrollment.

If you previously attended the School of Arts and Sciences in New Brunswick, earned at least one semester of grades at Rutgers, and wish to return to complete your undergraduate degree, submit the SAS Reenrollment Application.

Students returning after time away from another Rutgers school may also be eligible to apply to SAS through reenrollment. Review the admission requirements for your previous school or campus before applying. The Reenrollment page also explains the application routes for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree.

I attended Rutgers but never completed a semester or earned grades. Should I apply for reenrollment?

Information

No. If you were previously admitted to Rutgers but never earned semester grades at Rutgers, apply through Rutgers Undergraduate Admissions as a new student instead of through the SAS reenrollment process.

What are the application deadlines for reenrollment?

Information

Reenrollment applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Submit your application early so that, if approved, you have sufficient time to register for classes.

Refer to the SAS Reenrollment page for the application deadline for your semester of return and the application instructions.

I took time away from another Rutgers school and now want to attend SAS. Should I apply for reenrollment or a school-to-school transfer?

Information

If you are currently enrolled in another Rutgers school and want to transfer to SAS, follow the School-to School-Transfer-process.

If you previously attended another Rutgers school, took time away from Rutgers, and now wish to return as an SAS student, review the Procedures for Reenrollment into SAS from another Rutgers School. Admission is competitive, eligibility varies by previous school or campus, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

I was suspended or dismissed from SAS. Can I apply for reenrollment?

Information

Students seeking to return after Academic Suspension or Dismissal must follow the SAS reinstatement process. Reenrollment applications for students in this situation are limited to the Summer term.

My reenrollment has been approved. How do I register for classes?

Information

After your reenrollment is approved, use WebReg to register for course.

If you have questions or have been away from Rutgers for an extended period, speak with an SAS academic advisor before registering. After you register and the University systems update your enrollment, follow the instructions to reactivate your Rutgers NetID and email account.

Can I change or cancel my reenrollment application after I submit it?

Information

Yes. Before your official decision notice arrives by email, you may request a change to or withdrawal of your application. Changes may include your semester of return or your contact information.

Follow the email instructions on the SAS Reenrollment page and include your RUID and the changes requested. Once your official decision notice arrives by email, you can no longer submit changes to the application.

What is Academic Amnesty, and how does it affect my GPA?

Information

Academic Amnesty may be available to eligible students returning to SAS after at least five consecutive years away from Rutgers with a cumulative GPA below 2.00. Meet with an academic advisor to verify eligibility before reenrolling.

Before Amnesty can be awarded, eligible students must complete 12 new Rutgers degree credits with a GPA of at least 2.75 within one academic year of reenrollment.

If approved, prior grades are excluded from the cumulative GPA, which is then based on coursework completed after reenrollment. Prior D and F grades cannot be used to satisfy degree requirements. Prior grades of C or better may still fulfill degree requirements. Additional conditions and restrictions apply.
