Can I use a Rutgers University-Newark or Rutgers University-Camden class to meet Core Curriculum learning goals?

School-to-School Transfer students who come to SAS from Rutgers University-Camden and Rutgers University-Newark will have their prior curriculum evaluated at the time of transfer in order to determine Core Curriculum applicability. No Rutgers University-Newark or Rutgers University-Camden courses taken AFTER matriculation at SAS can be used to meet Core Curriculum learning goals. This includes online courses offered by units housed in Newark or Camden.

SAS students are expected to take all of their classes at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Rutgers University-Newark or Rutgers University-Camden classes taken after matriculation at SAS cannot be substituted for certified Core Curriculum courses.

What are the SAS criteria for admission from another New Brunswick School?

Students applying from one of the New Brunswick professional schools (the College of Nursing, Mason Gross School of the Arts, the School of Engineering, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Rutgers Business School in New Brunswick or the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy) must have completed by the end of the semester in which they are applying:

  • 12 graded degree credits (excluding remedial courses) at Rutgers University-New Brunswick by the end of the semester in which they are submitting their school-to-school transfer application.
  • A Rutgers cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.000. NOTE: The GPA used for admission may vary from the GPA shown on your transcript due to application of SAS credit and grading policies.
  • College Writing/Expository Writing (01:355:101), College Writing Extended (01:355:104) or an acceptable equivalent course with a grade of “C” or better.
  • At least two years of one world language in high school (or one year in college).

Students currently in either of the degree completion programs offered through the School of Management and Labor Relations or the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy are not eligible to transfer to the School of Arts and Sciences. Email with questions.

Students applying from Rutgers-Newark and Rutgers- Camden must have completed by the end of the semester in which they are applying:

  • At least two Fall/Spring semesters, including the current semester, with a minimum of 12 graded degree credits as students in their present school or college at Rutgers-Camden or Rutgers-Newark.
  • A Rutgers cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.000. NOTE: The GPA used for admission may vary from the GPA shown on your transcript due to application of SAS credit and grading policies.
  • English Composition I and II (Camden: 50:989:101 and 50:989:102 OR 50:350:101 and 50:350:102) (Newark: (21:355:101 and 21:355:102) or acceptable equivalent courses with grades of “C” or better. Exceptions to this policy may be possible-write to .
  • At least two years of one world language in high school (or one year in college).

What if I am dismissed from my previous school or have taken time off?

Students dismissed from their previous school will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

If you have taken time off from another school at Rutgers, you may apply to the School of Arts and Science via the reenrollment process. However, if you do not meet admission criteria at the end of a Spring or Fall term, you may not use Summer courses to meet our admission requirements for reenrollment. The only way to improve your record in this case is to return to your previous school, if that school will allow it.

If I am applying for fall admission, may I use summer session to complete an admissions requirement?

No, students must complete all admissions requirements by the end of the semester in which they are applying. (If you are applying from a Newark or Camden school and have not completed composition 102, please inquire at to discuss your options).

If accepted to SAS, is it true that all of my credits, including transfer credits will be re-evaluated and I might lose some credits awarded from my prior Rutgers school?

Yes, your transcript will be evaluated in accordance with SAS policy and procedure. You *may* lose Rutgers credit and/or transfer credit.

  • Example #1: SAS does not award credit for elementary world languages if the student has studied the same language in high school for two years; therefore, credit for elementary languages may be removed.
  • Example #2: SAS has different transfer credit policies than other Rutgers University undergraduate colleges. One’s current school may grant credit for a pre-college or transfer course that SAS would not.
  • Example #3: SAS does not allow credit for the same course more than once, including pre-college and transfer courses.
